Hartmut Janocha hat an der Universität Hannover Maschinenbau und Elektrotechnik studiert und dort auch über dynamische Abtastung räumlicher Konturen promoviert. Wenige Jahre später habilitierte er mit dem Konzept eines Mehrkoordinatenmessgerätes für den direkten Einsatz in der mechanischen Fertigung. Ab April 1985 wirkte er als Außerplanmäßiger Professor und Leiter der Abteilung Maschinen und Steuerungen am Institut für Fertigungstechnik und Spanende Werkzeugmaschinen der Universität Hannover.
