The letters are written in an early \n\u003cbr\u003e dialect of Akkadian and are part of the archives of an ancient firm. \n\u003cbr\u003e This firm consisted of a number of families engaged in local \n\u003cbr\u003e agriculture, the manufacturing of textiles, crediting, and international \n\u003cbr\u003e trade. As such it was part of the same larger trade networks as those \n\u003cbr\u003e already known from the contemporary Old Assyrian archives found in \n\u003cbr\u003e central Turkey. The firm strived to have good relations with local \n\u003cbr\u003e Amorite rulers, such as Sumu-la-El, the first king of Babylon, and they \n\u003cbr\u003e used their own trading agents to represent them in far-away cities such \n\u003cbr\u003e as Mari.
