When he reached India, Wilkins (1843-1902) was disappointed at finding no complete and systematic work on the mythology of the Hindus, so set out to compile information from scattered sources into a single reference. It was first published as Hindu Mythology, Vedic and Puranic by W. Thacker and Company, London, in 1882; this is a reprint of their 1900 second edition.
