Hogarth (1697-1764) is best known for his drawings of London, but artists and art students have usually at least heard of his line of beauty, a figure resembling an elongated letter S. Here is his explanation and justification of his ideas about it, first published in 1753 with the subtitle Written with a View of Fixing the Fluctuating Ideas of Taste. This edition replaces the lengthy and technical preface of earlier editions with one more attuned to the times, but retains all the original illustrations.
