The Johnson Collection, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, focuses on art in the American South from the late 18th century to the present day. Pennington is a curator (Smithsonian Institution, New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum, among others) and art historian who has been involved with the art of the South for 30 years. Published in conjunction with an exhibition, this volume's focus is on the work of 32 artists, the cultural context of the esthetic sensibilities displayed in the paintings, and the connections with the romantic movement as it unfolded in the South and elsewhere.
