Simpson creates a frame through which others can contemplate the achievements of Morrison in mediating between traditional representations of Black grammar, syntax and eloquence. As Simpson explores the title texts, she focuses on the ways Morrison manipulates the "look" of the language associated with Blacks in literature while simultaneously using standard English to express Black culture. Simpson analyses Morrison's syntax, orthography, grammatical patterns, the poetic functions which standard and nonstandard dialect serve, and the ways in which she can use the written word to depict orality. The result is an entirely new take on The Bluest Eye and Beloved and goes far beyond mere criticism, definitely capturing the cultural notes that are the true expression of these works.
