First published in response to pressure to implement "quick-fix" packaged literacy curricula and reform in education, this text examines how to subvert these packages. Larson (education, U. of Rochester) brings together 10 chapters in the revised edition, which examines the commodification of literacy and education. In this edition, there are three additional chapters on the reproduction of racialized spaces during a textbook adoption, an analysis of America's Choice by a classroom teacher, and an analysis of the UK's literacy strategy. These are added to revised chapters that also address the No Child Left Behind Act and initiatives like "Reading First" and topics such as the National Research Council report, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children. In addition, several literacy scholars from the US and UK discuss their experiences and problems with such prepackaged tests and standards and their impact on the practices of educational communities.
