Picture Books for Children : Fiction, Folktales and Poetry

In this illustrated guide for librarians, K-3 teachers, and parents, Northrup (reference librarian, Metropolitan Community College) offers access to high-quality pictures books for readers ages 4-8, published 2000-2011; most were published in the last five years. Although the guide focuses on US books, it includes some books published first in other countries. The books have been selected to demonstrate a wide variety of artistic styles and a balance of diverse male and female main characters. The first chapter reviews artistic styles, gives tips on evaluating picture books, and discusses trends in book illustration, such as graphic novels and digital illustration. The picture book entries, listed in thematic sections, offer synopses and tips on age range. The book includes many b&w illustrations from picture books.
