Michelangelo's complex sculptural program for the Medici Chapel has been the subject of interpretive speculation since the 16th century; no surviving documents explain its meaning, and a somewhat universally accepted interpretation made by Benedetto Varchi in 1549 was, by his own admission, a personal opinion. The author draws on deep knowledge of Renaissance philosophy and values to derive a new interpretation which owes a debt to the "Neoplatonist" school but is further developed. Contains b&w photos.
