The eight essays in this volume were first presented at a May 2000 conference at the Massachusetts Historical Society, Boston. Nine American historians consider ways in which Massachusetts immigrant communities past and present have reflected each group's unique cultural heritage, while also sharing a pattern of community creation and development which links their various ethnic experiences Irish, French Canadian, Jewish, Italian, Swedish, and African American.
