Lessons in Essence : A Novel

Suffering constant nightmares about a military takeover of Taiwan by China, Li, a teacher of ancient Chinese arts, loses his wife after a sexual liaison with a student, and retreats to a mountain exile, where he boards with cynical roommates and witnesses the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and the assassination attempt on Taiwan's president.
