The study deals with petitions from the Esclavos series of the Ecuadorian National Archives from court cases of the Corte Suprema de Quito in the period 1702-1849, in which enslaved people were involved directly. The focus is on the study of argumentative strategies as discourse traditions: including topoi, linguistic means of constructing ethos and pathos, and linguistic marking of argumentative functions and structures.
