Guiding convictions concerning the essence of the world's and mankind's becoming have a decisive impact on our coexistence. Due to the historicity of human beings, these guiding convictions have a perspective origin and character which cannot be cast off. In the conflict of ideologies and ethical institutions of human life, our coexistence has to find its peaceful and constructive character. In order for this to happen, it is essential to determine our own convictions and to concentrate on these. It is only in this way that the motives of the convictions for recognition and communication can be discovered with others and can be rendered productive. Using Christianity as an example, Eilert Herms shows what it is that applies to every imaginable realistic contribution to the understanding of our coexistence: the obligation and the possibility to communicate in a commitment to one's own positional perspective.
