Product Description

For a long time it was generally accepted that massive industrialisation combined with the associated dramatic intensification of social issues and the national question, which also gained hugely in importance, were the decisive developments in Europe in the second half of the 19th century.
This view is not disputed in view of the economic take-off and demographic explosion, and the nationalist identity seized on by ever greater segments of the population; but research in recent years has shown that traditional patterns of behaviour and lifestyle habits also continue to have an effect. In everyday life, religion still had an important role.
By giving several examples this book wants to show how religion and nation in East-Central Europe are linked during the long 19th century.
The articles focus on developments in partitioned Poland (the provinces of Posen, Ermland) and the Russian Baltic provinces (Livonia, Estonia), and thematise phenomena related to the Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Jewish faiths, as well as to non-confessional life.
