The Bugis are the indigenous inhabitant of Sulawesi. They are said to be the descendant of the Queen Sheba (Siti Bulkhis) wife of King Solomon (prophet Sulaiman a.s.), hence the name Bugis. Tanah Toraja, Northern Sulawesi was abundance with gold, iron, bronze and metals. These produce attract merchant from overseas to come to Tanah Toraja including merchant from Yeman, the home of the Sabaean (descendant of Siti Bulkis). Some of the merchant chose to settle down in Tanah Toraja and Siti Malangkae, a direct descendant of Siti Bulkhis is one of those merchant. There is another theory; since 300 B.C. the Bugis merchant had sailed to Sana’a in Yeman. One of the Bugis merchant was said, to have met, Siti Malangkae and got married. He brought her back to Tanah Toraja, and their descendant were called Bugis. They are various other theories with regards to the origin of the Bugis.
