While chemistry students are more or less adept at following the instructions of an experiment to learn the basics of the science, Chan and Tan have found that few of them understand the rationale behind the procedures, so are unable to plan an experiment to solve a particular problem. It is that planning process that they explain here. They consider planning using titration, using gravimetric analysis, using the gas collection method, for energetics experiments, kinetics experiments, electrochemical experiments, organic and inorganic qualitative analysis, organic synthesis, and spectrophotometric analysis.
