To what extent can theories of development coined in the Global North be applicable to Africa, Mawere asks, and why is it that there seem to be few development theories and models from Africa and for Africa. He answers the first question by noting that the Northern ideas about development were about conquest, and so irrelevant to the conquered. His second answer is about colonial education, in which Africans were convinced that they had nothing to contribute to their own fate, let alone that of the rest of the world. Among his topics are development and underdevelopment in Africa: through the lenses of theory, the blame game and politics of development in Africa, unpacking the pragmatics of poverty and inequality in Africa, gender and development in Africa, and climate change and environmental management strategies in Africa.
