To examine the factors that shaped demographic changes in Burma between 1852 and 1941, Richell developed a demographic framework based on analysis of late 19th- and early 20th-century census data and a comparison of information about the high rates of mortality to nutrition, sanitary and health services. Richell assesses infant, child and adult mortality, the incidence of endemic diseases, the impact of migration from India, and agricultural change.
