The US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, has trained more than 20,000 professional mariners. This work documents the Academy's evolution from its beginnings in 1937 to the present, drawing on archival material and interviews with past and present-day administrators, alumni, and current midshipmen. The book shows how Kings Point has adjusted its training and priorities over time to meet the needs of the nation, and details the role of the Academy and its students in various conflicts. The stories of ten graduates offer insight into the range of careers and leadership roles for which the Academy prepares its students. B&w and a few color photos are included. The authors are freelance writers and consultants. Annotation 2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
