Product Description

Originally published in 1924, in London, by Seeley, Service & Co., Ltd., this classic text describes the basics of most practical techniques of modeling and sculpting in a variety of traditional media. Toft, a noted sculptor and educator, starts with a description of advances made in sculpture in England from about 1894 to 1924. He continues with descriptions of elementary techniques, modeling a portrait bust, building up figures and groups in the round, using the waste and gelatin methods and casting. He describes in detail modeling in terra- cotta, relief, bronze, and in clay pieces used for larger works in wood or stone. He also describes working in marble, enlarging, and performing finishing work. He closes by analyzing masterpieces of sculpture from ancient Greece to the Wellington Memorial.
