Required mathematics courses for college students of the humanities and social sciences tend to be survey courses that touch on many aspects superficially, says Hafstrom (mathematics and engineering, U. of Minnesota-Duluth), and he believes a course focusing in detail on a few practical fundamentals would serve the spirit of the mathematics requirement better and prove more useful to the students as well. He provides a textbook for such a one-semester or one-quarter course. Among the selected aspects he discusses are the natural numbers, mappings and operations, relations and partitions, the integers, and the real numbers.
