Evans introduces Mesoamerican culture history to readers who know little or nothing about it, and presents a reference for specialists interested in Mesoamerican topics outside their particular research area. The general themes are Mesoamerica, Middle America, and its peoples; complex societies of the formation; cultures of the early classic; late classic, classic collapse, and epiclassic; and the postclassic and the rise of the Aztecs. Among specific topics are the initial formative about 2000-1200 BC, the Olmecs middle formative about 900-600 BC, the Maya in the early classic AD 250-600, Mixtec regions and Oaxaca, the rise of Tula and other epiclassic transformations, and early colonial New Spain.
