Soto-Crespo traces the circulation of "white trash" characters and fiction in the Americas, emphasizing constructions of it that differ from that in the US. In the Caribbean, he says, white trash refers to members of the planter class that lost their wealth-became decapitalized-when slavery ended. He claims that whereas white trash has been associated with social immobility or stuckness, in fact it circulates through transnational and literary representations.
