A native of Scotland, Marshall now resides in the U.S. where he is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the author of four books of paintings; his work hangs in permanent collections in the U.S., England, Scotland, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Botswana. In his latest text, he traces the history of the cruisers--small ships designed as commerce raiders, for commerce protection, and as scouts for the battle fleet--from their beginnings during the American Civil War through the cruiser battles of 1914-15 and the sinking of the last German raiding cruiser. Fifty-two watercolors, 30 pencil sketches, diagrams, and maps, illustrate cruisers in the topographical settings in which they were put to use in their time. Oversize: 12.25x9.25 ".
