The "wise use" movement arose in the 1980s and 90s as a backlash against environmentalism and, according to Helvarg (president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, an environmental organization focusing on ocean issues), has engaged in intimidation and violence against environmental activists and corrupt dealings within Congress and executive agencies, largely funded by big money corporate interests. He reports on these activities in this work of investigative reportage, updating the earlier 1994 edition to include discussion of "wise use in power" George W. Bush in the White House.
