David (English, Iowa State University) and Richards (English, Kennesaw State University) gather contributors from universities and community colleges to present a variety of creative and theoretically based approaches to the development of visual literacy. The assignments they describe are designed to reinforce an understanding of how visual and verbal elements contribute to a text's effectiveness, and can be used to foster critical engagement with visual language in undergraduate composition and communication classrooms. Some of the topics explored are the use of documentaries to develop student awareness of rhetorical elements, the photograph of Emmett Till and American terrorism, and teaching visual and cultural intertexts in electronic games.
