The authors use literature, and a culturally relativistic approach, to analyze the oppression of individuals with disabilities. Chapter 1 is titled "Who Defines Disability?". Chapter 2, "The Other," examines Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood, Forrest Gump, Herlihy's Midnight Cowboy, Groom's Forrest Gump, Morris' A Dangerous Woman. Chapter 3, "Reflecting American Culture," discusses the varied and changing depiction of people with disabilities across the cultural landscape. Further chapters go into the purposeful uses of disabled characters in stories to evoke pity, shame, and sadness; disability in children's literature; the near-absence of sex in connection with disability; and the disabled person as an object of comedy.
