Author Brandon Ellem, a historian as well as business expert, notes that union organizers initially obtained high wages for miners and a high degree of control over towns, the mines, and the land during the period between the 1960s and the 1980s. Ellem chronicles the process by which mining companies reversed union gains and changing working and labor conditions, and reports on the impact of company policies since the 1980s.
