Perret--whose comedy writing and producing credits include the stand-up of Phyllis Diller and Bob Newhart as well as Laugh-in, The Carol Burnett Show, and Welcome Back, Kotter--adds whimsy to this career memoir with the addition of an unconventional guardian angel. "Shecky" appears throughout the author's life and alternately blesses his sets and causes nightmares in his absence. The memoir seeks to inspire readers with a humorous narration of life's challenging circumstances. Annotation 2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
