Stanhope (1805-75), who wrote here as Lord Mahon, found Gibbon's account of the sixth-century Byzantine general Belisarius to be light enough that a separate work was called for. The first edition appeared in 1828, and the 1848 edition, published by John Murray in London, made no substantial changes to the text. Editor Anthony P. Schiavo has added some minor notes and bibliography to put the work in 21st-century perspective, and a map. The text has been re-set, but no index is provided.
