日本古代律令国家は、全国に道路をはりめぐらし、約１６キロごとに、早馬を乗り継ぐための施設―駅家を置いた。その数は、平安時代の法律書『延喜式』によれば、４０２。駅家の具体的な姿は、従来よくわからなかったが、近年発掘調査によって、山陽道の駅家を中心に、徐々にその実態が判明しつつある。本書では、それらの成果を紹介し、また、出土文字資料の検討を通して、駅家の機能に迫ってみたい。
