Harris offers lesson plans and guidelines for teaching math to middle school and high school students using techniques which stress math expertise as opposed to rote memorization methods. The book is divided into two sections--student worksheets or "workouts" and teacher-directed activities. Chapters cover addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and proportions and percents. The teacher-directed chapters cover problem strings, getting answers as close as possible, and relational thinking. Harris offers a variety of ways to solve mathematical problems including the open number line. An answer key is available online.
