Using hypothetical model systems at a steady state that are no more complicated than necessary to bring out the essential points, Hill begins with a survey of the elements of free energy transduction, including states, diagrams, and cycles, thermodynamic forces, various types of fluxes, efficiency and the rate of free energy dissipation and fluxes and forces near equilibrium. He then describes state probabilities and fluxes in terms of rate constants of the diagram and progresses in sophistication to describing free energy levels and applications to muscle contraction.
