Rather than concentrating on the needs of physicists, Lawden (University of Aston) wrote for undergraduate and graduate students of applied mathematics. In this reproduction of the 1967 edition published by Methuen & Co., Lawden develops his subject through a minimal set of axioms which are suggested by the physical world or required by the mathematical model. He covers the vector representation of states, spin, observables having continuous spectra, time variation of states, angular momentum, perturbation methods and Dirac's relativistic equation, including such applications as the energy levels of the hydrogen bomb.
