In 11 papers from a November-December 2007 workshop in Basel, Switzerland, historians and anthropologists explore how Christian missionaries to Africa collected information about the continent and its people that would otherwise not have been known in Europe. They focus on evangelicals and Pentecostals during the 20th century before about 1930, when professional anthropologists superseded them as scientists.
