Cottle (education, Boston University) argues that the period known as adolescence is a social construct influenced greatly by popular culture. He discusses how the consciousness of young people is dominated by the entertainment industry and the power of television and the computer, which constantly urge them to turn away from the normal evolution of their personal and social lives. He argues for the value of self-reflection as an ingredient of identity formation and a fundamental antidote to districting cultural influences. The author is a sociologist and practicing clinical psychologist. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
