As in past years, the emphasis of the September 1994 conference was primarily on the applications of surface modification technologies, their relevance to manufacturing and the characterization of surfaces. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics and represent the diverse nature of the field and the numerous difficulties associated with processing and characterization. The papers (invited and contributed) are grouped thematically: wear; advanced investigation techniques; lasers; ion beam and electron beam techniques; advanced coatings; advanced processes; modeling; thermal spraying; biomedical applications; and corrosion & miscellaneous.
