This textbook, a revision and expansion of A Manual for Articulatory Phonetics, is meant to explain to phonetics students the principles that will help them approach any language and describe and mimic its sounds with accuracy. The book's organization is based on articulatory phonetics courses taught at SIL International. Information from others, including those outside of SIL, is incorporated. This edition has chapters on vowels and palatography, has been updated to match current terminology, replaces the Americanist transcription systems with the symbols approved by the International Phonetic Association, and has been adjusted for better pedagogical use. The text is oriented mainly toward native speakers of American English. In addition to the subject index, an index of languages is provided. Floyd has taught phonetics and other courses at several SIL schools and is a linguistic consultant of SIL Peru. Bickford teaches courses in second language acquisition and articulatory phonetics at the Summer Institute of Linguistics, U. of North Dakota.
