Zimmermann investigates whether self-employment can potentially reduce the under-utilization of skills, and whether and how the skills acquired along one's professional biography are decisive for the decision to become self-employed. Then he applies the answers to the case study of highly skilled Peruvian small-scale entrepreneurs in Switzerland, elucidating the decision and strategies to become self-employed and how professional competences influence the decision and strategies.
