Microbiologists and other scientists examine bacteria in the genus Brucella, which cause disease in many domestic, semi-domestic, and wild animals, mostly mammals. The disease causes much economic loss, but is rarely fatal to humans. The topics include the comparative genomics and phylogenomics, recently developed molecular approaches to diagnostics and epidemiology, the biology and genetics of the outer membrane, novel targets for antibacterial agents, and molecular and chemical approaches to vaccine development.
