Takada's study in Botswana of the San (!Xun) gave him a collective idea of the native people of southern Africa, but when he actually encountered them in Namibia, he was overwhelmed by the variety of experiences each individual had accumulated. Therefore, he chose to analyze life stories as the primary method of his research. He covers kinship and naming terminology among the !Xun, inter-recognition of marginalization: the historical transition, narratives of life changes: surname and inter-ethnic relationships among the !Xun, and post-foraging society and child socialization.
