Sven Ingmar Thies, geboren und aufgewachsen in Hamburg, studierte Grafikdesign an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig und ging für seine Abschlussarbeit nach Tokio und Yokohama. Sein Interesse gilt seit dem Studium einem ganzheitlichen Gestaltungsansatz, der keine Grenzen zu anderen Gestaltungsdisziplinen, anderen Fachgebieten oder auch dem Handwerk zieht. Diese Überzeugung bestärkten zwei berufliche Stationen bei Henrion, Ludlow & Schmidt in London, wo Marken holistisch entwickelt wurden, und beim Kitayama Institute in Tokio, wo er im Rahmen eines zweijährigen Postgraduiertenstipendiums das Zusammenspiel von Architektur und Design kennenlernte. Neben projektbezogener freier Mitarbeit bei den Markenagenturen Enterprise IG (heute Superunion) und Landor (heute Landor & Fitch) gründete er 1998 Thies Design und entwickelt für Unternehmen und Institutionen durchgängige Markenerlebnisse. Seit 2011 unterrichtet Sven Ingmar Thies parallel zu seiner beruflichen Tätigkeit Grafikdesign an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien in der Klasse für Ideen.
