南方熊楠（１８６７‐１９４１）は、幼少時から本草学など東アジアの学問を学んだ後、米国および英国にわたり、研鑚を積んだ。在英時代以来後年まで書き続けられた英語論文や帰国後の日本語論文、そして膨大に残された書簡類からは、古今東西の文献を用いた独自の比較民俗学的観点や、その領域横断的な関心を垣間見ることができる。本書では、西洋および東アジアのみならず、東南アジア、インド、中近東など広範囲にわたる熊楠の学問の射程のなかでも、特に熊楠のアジアに対する視線を再検証し、その学問を思想史の中に位置づけるとともに、近代日本の一知識人のアジア観に関する新たな視角を示す。
