First, recent developments in molecular biology of antigen presentation and cell biological aspects of signal transduction are discussed, in relation to the potential of DC to stimulate lymphocytes and to trigger their in vitro differentiation. Next, the immunological role of DC in vivo , as studied in animal experiments, is dealt with, highlighting origin and kinetics of DC as well as their potential, upon in vitro exposure to antigen, to induce vigorous immune responses in vivo .
