The epithet "Tail-end Charlies" refers to bombers who occupied the most vulnerable position in a formation and to airmen at the rear position on each individual aircraft. The British co-authors (Nichol was shot down in the first Gulf War) cover the final bombing campaign against Germany, through accounts of US 8th Army Air Force and British Bomber Command airmen and those on the ground.
