A novel based on the true story of Tom and Roxa Malone, residents of the Ohio River Valley in the nineteenth century. In 1862, Tom tries to enlist in the Pennsylvania Volunteers but is rejected because he is too young. Two years later Tom goes to work asa deckhand on the towboat Shark, beginning a series of adventures and finally finding happiness with his beloved Roxa.
