Musician and composer Rizzo (piano, Beaver College) describes the achievements of jazz pianists selected by jazz specialists at the Hal Leonard Corporation, and educators and musicians. Choices were based on creativity, degree of influence, and command of the instrument; extra points were awarded for a convergence of the three. Only one woman made the cut, but he says maybe there will be another survey in a decade or so that maybe more will make it into.
