Brock (education, Purdue U.) and seven of her students journey together to find their voices and self-awareness in a world largely set against them. Brock provides the theoretical basis of their search along with the writings they create along the way, finding allies and enemies in their growth toward becoming powerful women in education who find great value and joy in their discoveries in each other and in themselves. Brock develops a pedagogy of wholeness, the theory and practice of which are startlingly different from those generally afforded women of color in and out of academe. Brock also includes methodologies for creating safe spaces for self-expression and growth. Annotation 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
