Pyne (life sciences, Arizona State U.), a fire historian and former firefighter, recounts the fires that occurred in the summer of 1910 that burned millions of acres in the Northern Rockies and how US Forest Service fire policy was changed to full suppression as a result. Using personal letters and descriptions, accounts of Army officers, and official records of the Forest Service, he discusses the conservation movement at the time, the months before the fires and the conditions that led to them, and the resulting changes in policy.
