Many are aware that a number of African Americans hailing from or working in Memphis distinguished themselves in building careers, art forms, or institutions; but DeCosta-Willis (romance languages emerita, U. of Maryland) offers no fewer than 223 biographical sketches and 122 brief notes of men and women who made a difference in their community and the world. She describes the life and work of scientists, educators, politicians, journalists, authors, practitioners of performing arts, doctors, lawyers, and business owners, ranging from a 19-year-old college graduate (and valedictorian) who made good to an anti-lynching activist and feminist. DeCosta-Willis provides a very good introduction, photographs when available, and cross-references by birth dates and occupations. The result is a good reference with a solid bibliography, accessible even to the general reader. Annotation 2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
